Week 1 is now in the books. Some teams looked great some teams looked REALLY BAD. Here are some things that stood out to me.
The Good.
Sam Darnold had a hell of a game. The dude has struggled to say the least since coming into the league. In fairness it may have very well had something to do with the teams that he was on. But for 1 week he looked like the QB that people had hopes for when he was coming out. Now was that due to him finally figuring something out or are the Giants just that darn bad?
IN another instance Baker Mayfield looked like a franchise QB. I have always thought that his struggles in Cleveland had a lot to do with the Browns. He was just not put in a good situation and they certainly didn't do him anything to help. I recall the week that OBJ's father made a video about Baker being horrible during his time there. And I was just like WOW because having watched that game the Browns could have won if OBJ didn't drop a ball that hit him right in the hands from Baker. It's good to see Baker proving people wrong. I have a little more faith in him than the Darnold situation due to the fact Baker took the Bucs to the playoffs last season.
The Bears and Steelers D both were outstanding they carried their teams to wins. A few years ago it looked like across the league that you were not going to see a lot of that. But defenses are starting to figuer some things out with all the rules the league has passed to help offense.
For one week the Pats looked like the Pats of old. And they did it against a team that was supposed to be a contender as well. We will see if this was just a one week thing or maybe just maybe they are back to being a playoff team. It at least made me take note they could possibly be back in contention to play January football.
There were a few really fun games to watch this weekend Houston vs Indy was a good game. And the Sunday night game between the Lions and Rams was a good watch. Man is it good to have football back or what.
The Bad.
Some of the rookies found out that they are not in college anymore. Including some of the top picks. Caleb Williams really struggled to say the least. The Bears offense looked about as bad as it ever has. Marvin Harrison Jr had a single catch for 4 yards. Yikes. And Bo Nix really struggled. It's not very often that a teams gets 2 safties from their defense and still finds a way to lose the game but that's what the Donks were able to pull off. The learning curve is strong and this doesn't make them a bust by any means. Just shows how big the jump is to the NFL.
The Browns! WOW what was that? In my predictions I had picked the Browns to be a possible contender. Yeah thanks for making me look like a fool guys. There O line is just horrible. You can't have a QB getting hit pretty much every drop back and expect him to give you a chance to win. Their WRs dropped a number of passes. And Watson clearly got frazzled by it all and started to panic. They looked like a 4 win team. If there is a week to look that bad I guess week 1 is the week to do it. BUT WOW they looked horrible. Add to it a bad Monday with yet another law suite for Watson I don't have the same outlook on the Browns as I did going into the season. We will see if they can change it back. BUT WOW that was horrible.
Cincy looked lost. Unlike the Browns I still think Cincy will be a threat at the end of the year. They have started out 0-2 before and still made it to the AFC championship game. And we can't think that the team we saw on Sunday is the team that is going to show up at Arrowhead on Sunday afternoon. There is 1 thing this year that leaves me questioning if maybe there is more to this slow start and that is the drama that has been going on with Chase. That at times has a way of showing itself on the field.
The Giants and Panthers looked like the Giants and Panthers. That' not a good thing.
Hate to see teams lose their QBS on the first week of the season. The Packers lost their QB for a few weeks. It doesn't look as bad as it could have been when the injury first happened but this might take them out of a chance for the division and hosting a playoff game. We will see if that hurts them
Well the refs are out to a start. I am still seeing people cry about them favoring the Chiefs. It's like did you not watch the rest of the games. They were calling the illegal formations all weekend long. Teams should adjust to it by the end of the year. We always see a thing the league has put a focus on get called non stop the first couple of weeks of the season and then it dies down. Just hate so much of the game time had the refs on the TV screen after a flag. Just makes me wonder if we need so many rules about where a guy is suppose to line up. And the crybabies didn't seem to mind this a year agon when Taylor was being singled out for it drawing more flags than anyone else in the league. I mean how much of that really impacts the play. Makes me miss the UFL games I watched over the spring.
Tyreek Hill. WOW! Of all the things one could have on their Bingo card I am not sure that's one anyone had. Having just watched the video of the arrest or whatever you want to call it the officers in question really need to either find some new work or need some anger management. Tyreek wasn't blameless in the encounter by any means. You have to listen to the cops when they tell you to do something you say Yes sir. But the reaction of the cops was overkill. Just an embarrassment .
The Bills do not go into the Bad section. But I am still not sure they will be as strong as they have been in the past couple of years. They got the Win but it was against a team that has really been bad for the past few seasons and it was after they started slow. I am not sure their win would have happened against a stronger team. I still think after losing Diggs they are going to take a step back. We shall see.
It was a great weekend of Football. And there are 17 more weeks to go. I love the NFL
